APAC OFFERS TWO YOUTH SUMMER WORKSHOPS

Aloha Performing Arts Company is offering two workshops for young people this summer. Innovations Public Charter School instructor Sue Boyum will teach a workshop for kids ages 8-12, which will be conducted 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 11-16. This workshop will focus on creativity and imagination, and will culminate with a performance of the play "Big Friendly Giant" by Roald Dahl, on June 16 at the Aloha Theatre. Tuition is $175 per student. Early dropoff, at 8 a.m., is available for an extra $30.

APAC CALLS FOR ORIGINAL SCRIPTS

Kona's Aloha Performing Arts Company has announced its request for scripts for the 14th annual Original Play Festival, which will be presented August 15 through 18 at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, Hawaii. Scripts of any length and on any subject will be accepted through postmark date May 21, 2007.

APAC OFFERS PERFORMING ARTS CLASSES

Aloha Performing Arts Company will offer seven classes in the new year, continuing its ongoing program of performing arts education. All instruction will take place at the APAC Loft in Kainaliu, on the second floor of the building containing Creative Costumes, directly across the street from Paradise Found.

Tuesdays will feature two classes. First, Jerry Tracy will continue his "Tuesday Trouper" theatre skills class for 8-12 year olds from 3:15 to 5:15, January 16 through March 6. Tuition is $100. From 5:15 to 6:30 p.m., Amma Maxwell will offer Mixed Dance Level 2, for those with previous dance experience. This class begins January 9 and will be ongoing, with tuition set at $75 for 8 classes.

CAST ANNOUNCED FOR "BYE BYE BIRDIE"

The husband and wife team of Randy Ressler and Sue Boyum headline the cast of characters for the award-winning Broadway musical "Bye Bye Birdie," the next production of the Aloha Performing Arts Company. Ressler, a Kona dentist, is playing songwriter Albert Peterson, and Boyum, an instructor at Innovations Public Charter School, plays his fiancee Rose Alvarez. Marc Valenti, first mate of the Fair Wind, is playing the title role of rock star Conrad Birdie, who is about to go into the army and as a publicity stunt arranged by Albert and Rose, visits Sweet Apple, Ohio, to bestow "One Last Kiss" on a girl from small town America. That girl is Kim MacAfee, played by Hualalai 9th grader Elise Levin. Kim's parents, Mr. and Mrs. MacAfee, are played by Jerry Tracy and Gayle Keller. Her brother, Randolph, is portrayed by Bowen Ressler, son of the two leading players. Hugo Peabody will be played by Tyler Wood, and Ursula Merkle by BriAnna Johnson. Catherine Hansen plays Albert's mother, Mae Peterson, and another husband and wife team, Kelly and Marylei Drake, play the Sweet Apple mayor and his wife.

APAC OFFERS "POEMPLAY" WORKSHOP

Aloha Performing Arts Company is offering a winter vacation theatre production workshop for children ages 8-12, entitled "PoemPlay." Dates are December 27, 28, and 29, 2006, and January 3, 4, 5, and 6, 2007. Weekday hours are 10:00 a.m. til 4:00 p.m., with tuition at $175. Early weekday dropoff at 8:00 a.m. is available for $30 more per student. Saturday, January 6 will be performance day. The work the students have done during the workshop will be showcased in a free public presentation at the Aloha Theatre at noon. Saturday's hours for all students are 10:00 a.m. til 2:00 p.m., allowing time for dress rehearsal, striking the show and celebrating completion.

AUDITIONS FOR "URINETOWN"

Aloha Performing Arts Company will hold auditions for "Urinetown, the Musical" by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis on Sunday December 17 at 2:30 p.m. and Monday December 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the APAC loft in Kainaliu, on the second floor of the building containing Creative Costumes. Auditions are being held early so singers can get a head start on learning the complex music. Some rehearsals will be held in late January and early February, and a full rehearsal schedule will begin in mid February. The show will be performed at the Aloha Theatre April 6-29, 2007.

ALL YOUTH CAST SELECTED FOR APAC MUSICAL 9/15/06

Aloha Performing Arts Company has completed casting and begun rehearsal for "Honk, Jr.", a zany modern musical retelling of the ugly duckling story, written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Thirty three performers ranging in age from 5 to 17 have been selected for the show, which will be presented at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu the first three weekends in October.

The leading role of Ugly, a young swan born into a duck's nest, is played by Banning Ramirez, who appeared in APAC's productions of "The Music Man" and "The Sound of Music" and also in Kealakehe Intermediate School's "Aladdin, Jr." Ugly's mother, Ida, is played by newcomer Jessica McDonald, a 7th grader at Kealakehe Intermediate. From the same school, 8th grader Shaun Lorenzo, who had the title role in "Aladdin, Jr.", will play the role of Drake, Ida's lazy husband.
