Aloha Performing Arts Company's artistic director, Jerry Tracy, will be on Oahu through May, guest directing "The Foreigner" at Honolulu's Manoa Valley Theatre. Tracy directed the Hawaii premiere of the comedy at MVT in 1986, and has directed it twice for APAC, in 1993 and 2002. Production dates for "The Foreigner" are May 3 through 21.
During Tracy's sabbatical, local educator Sue Boyum, fresh from playing the narrator in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," will be directing Robert Harling's "Steel Magnolias" for APAC, and Molly McGivern will teach his weekly Tuesday Trouper acting class for 8-12 year olds. McGivern was featured in the recent APAC productions of "The Sound of Music," "The Rocky Horror Show," and "The Vagina Monologues," and the upcoming "Steel Magnolias." The Tuesday Trouper class will run for 10 weeks, April 4 through May 30, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuition is $120, and enrollment is limited, so parents and guardians are advised to pre-register students by calling the APAC office at 322-9924.

Aloha Performing Arts Company has announced its request for scripts for the 13th annual Original Play Festival, which will be presented August 16 -20. Scripts of any length and on any subject will be accepted through postmark date May 27, 2006.
Entries should be typewritten, double spaced, bound, with sequentially numbered pages, including a list of characters and a brief description of the play. Three copies of each script, including the character list and description with each, are requested to expedite the selection committee's evaluation process. Scripts should not contain the playwright's name. One separate cover sheet with the play's title and the playwright's name, address, phone numbers, and e-mail address should be included, so that anonymity is possible in evaluation and selection. Musical entries must be accompanied by three performance quality cassette tapes or CDs with voice tracks.
Aloha Performing Arts Company has received a $23, 577 grant from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to help fund activities for the current season, ending June 30, 2006. SFCA's grants are made possible through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaii and by the National Endowment for the Arts. Last year, the foundation welcomed a new source of funding from the Department of Human Services, and the partnership continues through fiscal year 2006. SFCA is commemorating it's 40th anniversary this year, and APAC welcomes the opportunity to join in the celebration by helping nurture the arts in the Kona community. The Aloha Performing Arts Company (APAC) will hold auditions for its upcoming production of playwright Robert Harling’s award winning comedy “Steel Magnolias” on February 20 and 21st. Director Sue Boyum will begin auditions promptly at 6:30pm at the APAC loft.
“Steel Magnolias” is set in Truvy’s Beauty Shop in the 1980’s and is the story of six Southern women who share their personal triumphs, tragedies, beauty tips, recipes and scandalous gossip! The center of the group is a bride with problems and her mother who looks to her friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fears concerning her daughter. It has wonderful, strong parts for six talented actresses.
The characters are:
Truvy: Age 35 plus. Truvy owns the Beauty Shop, a converted garage alongside her house in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Anyone who is “anybody” has her hair done at “Truvy’s”. She's vivacious, outgoing, caring and has a great sense of humor. Ideally, she would be portrayed by someone who knows how to “do” hair.
